Spring Forward: The After Plan

Well, it happened. The clocks have moved an hour up.

If you are like me you may have been up in the middle of the night thinking… so, how many hours of sleep will I really get if my child wakes at this time?

With the clock springing forward we technically lost one hour of sleep, that means your child may be a tad bit grumpy today, if you did not adjust their schedule.

No worries, this blog is here to be your saving grace to help you tackle the big and bad, Daylight Savings Time Change.

Adjust The Schedule:

You are going to move naps and bedtime up 15 minutes the first three days.

If they typically wake at 7am but today woke at 8am (usual 7am) you are going to move nap up 15 mins.

Then, take 15 mins off the back end of the nap and so forth.

You will also, bring bedtime up 15 minutes. You will continue to do this until you are back on track.

If none of this makes any sense, I hear you!

Sometimes when you’ve never implemented sleep techniques the changes can seem foreign.

Three tips to get you back on track:

Tip 1: Strict Routine

  • Get back to the consistent routine.

  • Ensure you are completing the full bedtime routine.

    • Bath

    • brush teeth

    • pajamas

    • play

    • bed

Tip 2: Early Bedtime

  • If you see that their schedule is completely off, try moving bedtime up 15-20 minutes to keep them from getting overtired.

  • This early bedtime will help them catch up on the missed sleep they may have not received the night before due to the time change.

Tip 3: Check the Room

  • Now, when you lay your little one down for bedtime it will not be as dark outside. CHECK THE ROOM DARKNESS

  • Ensure that sound machine is on!
