Sleep Skills or Milestone’s Regression

What is a developmental milestone? It is considered to be “things” most children can do by a certain age.

This blog IS not here to cause anxiety and tell you your child should be meeting these milestones by a specific age. This blog is to calm your nerves around nap interruptions and let you know, milestones can cause sleep interruptions!

What Milestones can you expect your little one to experience?

  • Rolling (anywhere between 2-5 Months)

  • Sitting up (anywhere between 5-9 Months)

  • Crawling (anywhere between 5-10 Months)

  • Standing (anywhere between 6-12 Months)

  • Pulling up (anywhere between 6-13 Months)

  • Couch Crusing (anywhere between 7-13 Months)

  • Walking (anywhere between 9-18 Months)

What can you expect these milestones to do?

  • Hello protested naps…

  • Hello Night Wakings that are new, or have gotten worse!

  • Hello Early Mornings… (4-6am).

Side Note:

If your child has always… ALWAYS had short naps, multiple night wakings, and has gotten out of bed before 6am… we are probably dealing with more than new milestones.

When To Understand… It is NOT A Milestone…

  • It’s been happening longer than 7-8 days.

  • It is the age range to drop a nap.

    • 4-5 months

    • 6-7 months

    • 13-15 months

    • 2.5-3.5 years

  • How they fell asleep, is how they want to fall back to sleep.

    • cuddles

    • rocking

    • pacifier

    • feeds

  • Inconsistency and or sleep schedule off.

    • Every night and day looks different.

      • Not consistent on offering naps and nights in the crib.

      • The schedule is different more than 20% of the time.

  • Takeaways:

  • Keep track of your child’s sleep if you see that inconsistencies begin to takeover.

  • Get back on a routine 80% of the time.

  • Stay consistent in your child’s sleep priorities.

  • Offer early bedtimes.

  • Keep up with age appropriate schedules!
